Profile:

Emmanuel Dugan doubles up as a Researcher at the CSIR-Soil Research Institute and a Lecturer at CSIR-College of Science and Technology (CCST).

His research focus has been on Soil and Environmental Physics; Sustainable Soil and Water Conservation/Management; Biochar as soil amendment – especially it’s modification to the soil’s physical environment; Soil fertility and plant nutrition and Soil, Water and Nutrient management for Lowland rice production.  Before joining SRI in 2008, he was the Research Officer of the United Nations University (UNU) project on People, Land Management and Environmental Change (Later modified to People, Land Management and Ecosystem Conservation) – PLEC. After excelling in this position, he was appointed again as Research Officer on the follow‐on nationwide Global Environmental Facility (GEF) funded project on “Sustainable Land Management for Mitigating Land Degradation, Enhancing Agricultural Biodiversity and Reducing Poverty (SLaM) in Ghana”. He was in‐charge of the project’s GIS and database development. During this period (2004‐2008), he researched into natural resources, agro‐biodiversity and environmental management, dynamics of agricultural land use and farmer adaptations; and land management for food security and rural development. He was a member of the team who researched into ‘Impact of Climate Change on Land Management’ an aspect of Netherland Climate Assistance Programme (NCAP) – https://searchworks.stanford.edu/view/8828896. He was sponsored by Stockholm Environmental Institute – SEI (USA) to present a paper at the Climate Information for Managing Risk –CIMA conference, in Florida, USA (2008). He was awarded the prestigious Commonwealth Scholarship to pursue PhD degree in Soil Science by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) in the UK (Sept. 2008). Emmanuel, won sponsorship by the EU to participate in an e‐course on Evaluation of Sustainable Development Projects/Programmes, which was organized by EASY‐ECO and which was also followed by a two‐week hands-on practical in Lund, Sweden (2009). He was invited to make a case study evaluation presentation, using the SLaM experience in Brussels, Belgium (2009). Emmanuel with his team of four (Biochar Research Group) won the best researchers award in Ghana for the year 2010 (http://cscuk.dfid.gov.uk/2010/12/scholar-wins-best-research-award/). He was a student member of the British Soil Science Society (BSSS) and currently a member of Ghana Soil Science Society (GSSS). Emmanuel has authored and co‐authored papers in international journals and International conference proceedings (‪Emmanuel Dugan – ‪Google Scholar). He was a visiting fellow for eight months (Oct 2016 to May 2017), at the Soil Research Institute of the University of Reading, through Commonwealth Academic Fellowship award, by the CSC, UK. Since his return to Ghana, Emmanuel is now the SRI Focal Person of the Government of Canada support programme of Modernizing Agriculture in Ghana (MAG), in Ghana’s agricultural sector improvement. His new role involves training and conducting verification demonstrations on sustainable soil fertility management technologies, such as use of biochar, compost and integrated soil fertility management (ISFM); to farmers and key players along the agricultural value chain throughout Ghana. He was part of the team that developed the Soil’s Information Hub (www.csirsoilinfo.org)
