The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research – Soil Research Institute (CSIR-SRI) hosted a promotional seminar for senior members (core) in Kumasi on Thursday, September 19, 2024. Promotion within the CSIR is determined by the applicant’s contributions to the institute’s mission, vision, and goals.
Dr. Collins Tay, director at CSIR-SRI in his opening remarks acknowledged promotion challenges within SRI upon taking office and requested the support of the head office to organise this seminar. “Promotion within the CSIR is a very laborious process, and as scientists if you do not know the process of getting yourself promoted is a huge problem”, he said.
He therefore sees this seminar as an opportunity for scientists in the institute to have a fair idea of what goes into promotion.
Dr. John Kwasi Ocran, Senior Scientific Secretary and Head of the IP Office at the CSIR Head Office, and the facilitator, stated that the CSIR promotion system is the only way for our scientists to advance, with some emerging as leaders. “Promotion will be based on significant research and scientific output, publications, commercialisation and technology transfer activities, as well as the officer’s overall performance and contribution to the Council as per the regulations in place,” he added.
Madam Eugenia B. Badu from the CSIR head office also presented on Governing Rules and Regulations, the online promotion system, Sectoral Screening, External Assessment, and some observed promotion-related lapses. Participants shared their key takeaways from the seminar and the positive experiences that the seminar would bring to their roles.
